Day 1 (Jan 29)
First stop was Honolulu. Spent the first day wondering around the property we are staying at, checking out the local beaches and wondering around the city. There is plenty of shopping in this town. Of course, we had to have our first mai tai of the trip.
Day 2 (Jan 30) We took a drive up the east side of Oahu today. But first, hiked the Diamond Head Trail in the dark so we could watch the sun rise.
We had heard about a place up the east coast by the name of Kahuku that had a bunch of food trucks where you stop by and eat. Had to check that out. The shrimp was very good, and very messy.
After lunch we did some more driving up the coast.
We head out to Ko'a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach Koloa tomorrow. Just some food for thought. We needed to spend a day or two in Honolulu just to say we went and to see what this most populated Island was like but we wont go back. Honolulu is very crowded and focused on shopping. There are tons of shops in the city and people spend their time in the shops. We really were not interested in this. Also noticed that everything is in two languages. English and Japanese. It seems that this Island is VERY popular with the Japanese. My guess is that is due to the close proximity to Japan.
Day 3 (Jan 31)
First day on Koloa. We know we will like this island more than Oahu. The resort is very nice and there is a lot to do in addition to hanging out on the beach.
Day 4 (Feb1)
First thing we did this morning was get our scuba diving in. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of that. Maybe Teresa has one or two so I may add later. We were very apprehensive for this dive since it is the first since getting certified. Turned out we were just fine. We did two dives at 45 ft for about 40 minutes each. Saw turtles, an Eel and of course many many fish. The conditions were not that great since this was a beach dive and the weather was not perfect but we accomplished our goal which was to get another dive in before we forget everything we learned. Now we are excited to add a dive to our Croatia trip in May. That dive will be great I think.
Went on another short hike today.
Walking the beach you never know what you will run into!
Day 5 (Feb 2)
Day 6 (Feb 3)
Today we took a scenic drive up the west side of the island. We heard there was a canyon at the top of the mountain that you could look down on and that it compared to the Grand Canyon. First thing to know is that it is normally cloudy up there at about 4500 ft. We got there by 9am and drove up, stopping at all the lookouts. Most were too foggy to see much. We figure by the time we are driving down the fog would lift and we would see more. We did but it was still not clear out. And as far as the Grand Canyon comparison. Not really, it was nice but not the holly shit feeling you get at the Grand Canyon.
Day 7 (Feb 4)
Today we decided to take a tubing trip. Turned out to be great. We tubed in the drainage ditches built by immigrants, many from China back in the late 1800's. They dug holes in the mountain in order to transport water to the sugar cane fields. It was a really neat trip and very scenic.
Day 8 (Feb 5)
Fly home today! Not ready to go.
